IWMA Educational Trust News
The IWMA Trust Fund, which is a charitable organisation registered in the UK, was established for the purpose of supporting education and training in the wire and cable industry worldwide for the next generation of wire and cable professionals. Its funds are maintained by the IWMA, which makes an annual donation to the Trust. A board of trustees drawn from the industry administers the charity and decides upon all awards that are made to individuals or organisations, according to a strict set of conditions.
There are two main elements to the work of the Trust. Its main activity is the awarding of scholarships of up to US$24,000 or its equivalent over a two-year period to an institute, training organisation, university, college or similar establishment to assist an individual or group of trainees, students or apprentices engaged in study, research or training activities related to the wire, cable or wire product industries.
The Walter Niehoff Scholarship scheme is named in memory of a founder member and past president of the IWMA. Applications can be considered from anywhere in the world but an application must be introduced and endorsed by an IWMA member organisation. Members of the IWMA are not pre-cluded from applying for a scholarship for one of their own trainees or sponsored students.
A second element to the IWMA Educational Trust is the John C Hogg Travel Award, named after the late founder and Secretary General of the IWMA. These travel awards, which have benefited a significant number of trainees since the inauguration of the award, are made to successful applicants from all over the world to give them a unique opportunity that they might not normally have to cover the costs of travel and hotel accommodation to attend wire Düsseldorf, the world’s largest and most important exhibition for the wire and cable industry.
The Trustees have recently made an award to the Institute of Spring Technology (IST) to assist with the funding of a series of training seminars in the UK, which attract trainees from various parts of the world, as well as a programme of seminars in India, Thailand and China.
